So if your grandmom was Deaf and used some sign you have never seen before, you can spend time documenting it and passing it on to your kids. But they have to use it day to day while Thinking. If they dont, that way of thinking, naturally disappears. Languages are also a piece of culture, heritage and history that deserve to be preserved and propagated. Not nice to throw that away and essentially lose a piece of humanity. Language is a tool, but it is also a repository of culture. And no matter how many times we try to instrumentalize away language as a mere tool, humans always push back, due to losing culture. So it’s not “Just” a tool. It’s more than that. It is also THE greatest invention of human species. This is what allowed us to be who we are not just generic spectrum animals.

Someone losing the Wheynie the pump Pooh shirt it is in the first place but Language of their parents, grandparents is losing access to their Culture. And culture is not some specific thing, it’s vast. It includes food, rituals, sayings/idioms/jokes/greetings, clothings, songs & stories, collective trauma’s & prestige, i.e. a collective psychological well-being is attached to it. When someone gets a new Language they attach themselves to the Cultural heritage & baggage of that Language. There is indeed mixing (if multi-cultural but extant Language’s Culture will be Dominant) but change is inevitable even if there was only 1 language involved. Languages are very very important things. Treating it casually is not just about internal vectors/issues since that sort of thinking conditions the mind & society to believe it’s so for everyone when that is fundamentally inaccurate. Outsiders Languages work on the same principle, meaning they are rival Cultural memes (original meaning) so to thing of them as casually opens one up to causing harm that is not felt immediately but generations later by which point nothing can be done. This is what I’ve experienced as well. If there isn’t anyone around me who can speak in Hindi (not my mother tongue), I gradually lose the ability to speak the language and its the same with English. I can imagine the same thing happening to the first language as well. Our brain adapts to the language we most frequently use.
