I’m this exact scenario right now as the Virginia Tech Hokies Football 2023 It’s In My DNA shirt Besides,I will do this hiring manager, and I assure that mine isn’t. HR has all these banding, grade, and pay rules, along with just generally being unavailable/slow to act. I’ve had several offers I’ve submitted to them and said: offer this candidate $X. They refused and offered $10k less than X, because dumb HR reasons. And that took longer than a month of back/forth to get accomplished. It’s extremely unlikely to be a negotiating tactic. It’s very common for HR and the hiring manager to be at odds about an offer to a candidate. In fact, in my experience it’s more often than not that they’re at odds. Candidate wants the best package. Hiring manager wants the candidate. HR wants the package to be consistent with market price and internal equity. Finance wants to manage budget. That’s the dynamic I am lucky to have had a hiring manager literally tell me before at a higher ed job I applied for and every institute may be different “I love everything you have on your resume, but it would be impossible to hire you for the salary you asked because they put the salary ranges on the website but the policy is we will never offer you more than mid range and you are on the higher end of my salary range.

But with that said you have nothing to lose, I would start off by saying “I would love to join the Virginia Tech Hokies Football 2023 It’s In My DNA shirt Besides,I will do this company and everyone I met has been wonderful, but currently I make XYZ and I cannot leave for any less than $X.” As someone who works at a large university, this is the truth. No one gets the higher end of the range, whether they are a new higher or current employee. I’m at a large university and I’ve had both happen. One job I interviewed for I was already making about $63k and at the first interview they said their top offer would be $55k. Ok, thanks, we’re done. My most recent job I got in February had the top of the range at $85k and that was where I currently was. They offered $90k. But it was also a large school with a lot of funding. I’m in higher ed and my job was posted with like a 78-90k range; they offered 88, I got them to 92. Then I discovered after starting that 92 is the 25th percentile which is the minimum they are supposed to hire at for equity reasons, lolll. Now I’ll make less than the upcoming new hire, and I don’t get a raise for over a year due to when I started (have to be working as of Jan 1 to get the fiscal year raise in July). Higher ed is dumb with pay.
