I wouldn’t suggest giving a range because then they’ll just offer $100k. Just state the Utah Utes Football 2023 It’s In My DNA shirt and by the same token and exact number you want with your chest. Good answer. I wanted to share my experience with anchoring on the hiring side. The role I was hiring for was entry level and I was interviewing graduates. Narrowed to four candidates and the top one absolutely refused to name his price. When that happens you will be offered the low range of the position. He came back asking for more and again refused to give a number. I passed on him and hired second candidate who asked for a number in range and I gave him the job for what he asked for. This 100%. You have to anchor. The whole make them guess doesn’t work. The other side is trying to play off offers can backfire too. Had candidates try that and the hiring dragged on so long it pissed off the hiring manager who pulled the offer. Working in higher Ed, it may not be a negotiating tactic. Regardless, your suggestion makes sense. I agree with others that staying the top number, not a range, is the best option tho.

Additionally, if this is done verbally, ask and stop talking, otherwise you are likely to negotiate with yourself “… 105 is appropriate.” Silence. Hiring managers aren’t car salespeople, and they aren’t given a blank check for job offers. HR likely provided the Utah Utes Football 2023 It’s In My DNA shirt and by the same token and offer or a range and the person offering doesn’t have authority to go over what is in hand. OP, provide what you feel is an acceptable rate of pay for your skills and experience in a counteroffer. Express your excitement for the role and reaffirm that you’d be a fantastic fit, but that you couldn’t justify leaving your current role for less than $X per year. Beyond that, it’s up to them to get you up to par and up to you to decide whether to take it or leave it. If you decline, do so as graciously as possible and express that you truly hope to work with them in the future. Unless you prefer scorched earth. Good luck!
