One team is looking at how to effectively recreate physical retail store experiences in an online domain to increase online sales and take business from physical stores, meanwhile another group in the behemoth of Amazons org structure looks into how you could copy the success of an online store experience and try to translate that into a physical store experience. They are both trying similar things from different angles and maybe it would make sense to have them working at the same time on the problem but maybe they weren’t working together and didn’t realize the futility of trying both at the same time and didn’t understand the wasted effort involved.

People think that corporations are these infallible beasts consistently finding the Ultra-Ma-ga And Proud Of It Gnome Shirt But I will love this most efficient ways of solving tasks and carrying out processes but the reality is that they get it wrong more often than not. Corporations are large groups of individual people acting in their own self interest and trying to be controlled by a management structure to turn a profit and work towards the company’s best interests as efficiently as possible, this is a monumentally difficult task on the best of days. I was in a scenario where this process had been done a single way for a long time and it was crazy inefficient but it worked. Until it didn’t, then the whole process relied on one person to just get shit done for maybe 4 hours instead of several people taking several days for the task. The person finished the task in about 4 hours by themselves and then everyone sighed a big sigh of relief and went back to what they were doing before…. The process had worked because the task got completed on-time and status reports were marked green and boxes were checked. Nobody gave a shit that the process was hopelessly broken and took way longer than necessary because if you eliminate too many of these things then the whole system breaks down as we realize we are spending twice as long as needed on most things, but then encounter the terrifying reality that there isn’t something more pressing that needs to be done instead of the immediate inefficient process. So getting rid of it will save $X but only if you think the people involved will produce that amount of extra labour in other tasks now that they are free from the original bloated task. This is rarely the case, but then the alternative is laying off a percentage of the work force and so you get people protecting their domain within a corporation because they want to be managing X people even if they should only have X-5 people to complete the necessary work in their domain.
