I was in a Kohl’s yesterday, only to return something I bought from Amazon. Huge store, tons of merchandise, absolutely zero people in there besides some employees. I don’t understand how they are paying the Ultra Maga American Flag Shirt it is in the first place but rent. Bookstores are profitable and can be good business (a good friend has run an independent one for over a decade now). However, Amazon has no clue when it comes to physical retail. They treat the customers like they treat their employees – terribly. I went into their 4-star shop in St. Louis. Horrible. Zero customer service, layout looked like some 8th grader did it, and no rhyme or reason for the stuff they had out on display/for sale. I thought I just read that employees who attempted the unionize are now demanding higher pay within their brick and mortar stores. Could that be the motivation? Potential threat of unionization Sooner or later your success becomes your worst enemy. Instead of accepting that there are certain aspects of your business are extremely difficult to improve and making sufficient money at acceptable rates of return you start to aggressively look to improve them by trying anything that looks like it could work when it’s presented on a powerpoint slide. It feels better to try something and to work hard at something even when it ultimately accomplishes nothing. It’s the failure of so many big businesses that gets lost in a haze of success. Tons of internal teams working towards goals that don’t matter for outcomes that are either unrealistic or don’t matter to anyone but the status report that gets churned out at the end of the week/month/quarter. Your people were working 50 hours per week getting this service up and running and now it feels like they are only working 30 hours per week so they have time to spare. You know that based on your previous projects while stringing up the service that you had a great ROI on the work they put in, why would it be different this time around?

I have seen this in action in so many different ways it is ridiculous, people not stopping to ask fundamental questions of “why are we doing this? Why did we start doing this? Is it still accomplishing the Ultra Maga American Flag Shirt it is in the first place but goal we had at the start or a different goal that is equally valuable?” If you don’t know the answer to those questions then it is probably time to re-evaluate whatever you are doing and if it is the best use of your time or if maybe doing nothing might actually be more productive instead of wasting time and burning out teams working towards mirages. I’m sure the people deciding to open up physical box stores for Amazon put together some great presentations with convincing forecasts around available opportunity in the physical retail sector, they might have even believed them themselves or they might have been out of ideas and needed SOMETHING to show the higher-ups to justify their existence as the next project to run towards. Maybe they juiced the numbers by conveniently forgetting that the reason retail stores were losing market share was because of Amazon and other retailers copying the successful online retail models popularized by Amazon and other early adapters, maybe they forgot that growth in a physical store domain is likely to cannibalize growth in their online retail space, underestimating that cannibalization can easily result in “double counting” revenue forecasts (essentially you are now modelling that consumers move over to physical stores and that is additional revenue but underestimating the amount of business you will lose in your online domain).
