Honestly I think those shows are very much products of their time. In the Toxic Skulls Club This Gon’ Be Our Year 2023 Shirt in contrast I will get this 90s, not many people had cell phones and you made friends by either at work, hobbies or going out clubbing. With the 00s, it was still plausible enough to have a close circle of friends that mostly started off as teenagers in high school/college and could blossom in their early to late 20s. Because of a gradual shift in social climate over the last 5-6 years – think MeToo, COVID – anywhere that removes social gatherings or forced everyone to go online only and those are reasons why the types of friendships depicted on tv shows are fictitious as hell. I was born in the 90s so I can’t say this from life experience–but based on my parents’ stories this was common when people had to frequent the same places to find each other pre-cell phone. Like, you could leave someone a message on their answering machine, but if you wanted to see them it was helpful to have a few spots that everyone would hang out. It was utilitarian in a way.

I feel very insecure about not having a lot of friends having been a commuter student in a working class college, where I had friends on campus but no one would connect off campus bc we all live 90 min away in different directions and worked. Everyone I have ever dated has a close-knit group of friends, but they are their high school friends. In this, many of them do not live in the Toxic Skulls Club This Gon’ Be Our Year 2023 Shirt in contrast I will get this city anymore, but they talk on discord constantly, play videogames together, and have active group chats. I was a late bloomer to digital hangouts, so I have come to appreciate it but I have always craved the Friends/HIMYM style friend thing. The only people I know who have dynamic, in-person communities are food service workers like bartenders and waitstaff. To be fair, a lot of these that I know are working these jobs because they want to hang out and be in the music scene, so it’s a bit chicken or the egg.
