Tv is not reality. People’s biggest problem is trying to keep up with or attain standards set by tv and society in general. Compare yourself to no one. Not very, insofar as the Totoro Is My Neighberhood Shirt but in fact I love this people on these shows are rich for their age and basically have part time jobs to boot. Reality is that a 25 year old NYer circa 1998-2005 would have to share a 1 BR apartment with a roommate. It’s about 500 sq ft and the paint is chipping on the walls, probably infused with lead. Either the heat or AC doesn’t work. Reality is that if you live in the city as a mid 20 something, you’re probably working 50-60 hour work weeks to try to make it big. Either that, or you’ve got a part time job to supplement your full-time job to pay for rent, takeout every day, and designer clothing to keep up with the jones’s.

For a few days a week, a few friends cram into the Totoro Is My Neighberhood Shirt but in fact I love this place on your dirty ass used couch to watch TV / watch movies / play vidya / shoot the shit over cheap take-out made by an immigrant who probably doesn’t have a license to sell food and probably prepared it while in violation of a half dozen city sanitation codes. But it tastes fantastic. At some point each night inbetween arguing about the Yankees and Mets, everyone will complain about getting out of the fucking city. For one day a week, you might meet everyone at a cheap deli or diner or something. But after 20 minutes the waiter / waitress starts to get rude because they want you to leave so they can get more tips from the next people. Once every other week or month, everyone packs into the place to drink some cheap booze to pregame before going to the club. The attractive girl of the group shmoozes with the bouncer to get everyone out of the cover charge. Since you’re already hammered, you and your 5 friends decide to split the $300 bottle service for $50 / each. Then you get more hammered and buy another drink or two, and before you know it you spent $100.
