I got full room and board and only got like a $500 monthly stipend on top of that. Now, I was also considered a part time student and got some college credits, but $1,500/ month after most of your major expenses are taken care of is a lot better thank many other jobs out there. This isn’t indentured servitude any more than any other job is.

It depends on the salary. 19k after food and housing is fine, however I have met au pairs who work for a miniscule salary. Ah fair point. It depends though! I assume wealthy people go through an agency, however I have met au pairs who went through a website so I guess their salary is actually theirs to keep. They need a j visa. It’s not legal in the US to work without a visa that has work permission. They must have entered on a b visa (tourist visa) and worked illegally. Yea that works out to 8 bucks an hour….. Minimum wage is less than that and I hear no one crying indentured servitude there Just saying room and board doesn’t mean 19k is worth it. Room and board could mean crappy food and a small bedroom, or it could mean 1 meal a day and a shared bedroom, or it could mean 2 meals a day and sleeping on the pull out couch. “PLUS room and board” doesn’t mean much in the au pair world. mm, nope. there are requirements for au pair families, you can’t just stick them on pull-out couch in the living room. You are required to provide them with their own room, with a door, lock, bed, closet/furnishings, etc. AND you are required to pay for a semester of college for them, too, so they can take classes. Calling it indentured servitude?? Nope haven’t seen that before like I said!! Complaints sure all the time that’s why I didn’t say that!!! Good try though 😊
