The bigger issue is that I doubt a live-in nanny like that actually works only 40-45 hours a week, and is instead considered constantly on-call without any extra money. So it ends up being more like 2-3 an hour and no time off ever. And probably treated like shit by everyone involved to boot. Which is far less appealing. Au pairs are usually working in a country other than their own that they want to visit and stay a while. Many are students and it solves both their housing need and gives them the This Is Why We Kneel Shirt and I will buy this income of a part-time job. $8/hrs after housing and utilities are paid, plus no commute is a step up for a lot of folks. There are many people who don’t have anything like that available at the end of the month without relying on a 2nd person to help offset bills or working multiple jobs or both. When I looked into it about 9 years ago, there was much more to it than that, and it was much more expensive. You have to provide a private bedroom and bathroom, health insurance, taxes, 2 weeks paid vacation minimum, set days off per week so they could plan time for socializing/making friends, and their own transportation if you expect them to ever do things like pick up kids from school. Plus they had a limit on how many hours per week you could expect them to work to hopefully avoid their exploitation.

This was through a service, of course, and I imagine there are people who claim to have an au pair, but are not doing it legally or through a service. Au pairs are highly regulated, especially as a lot of them come from countries with many more benefits than here… so the This Is Why We Kneel Shirt and I will buy this agencies require some too. The 19,000 is how much the parents pay, not how much the au pairs make. The agency they use takes 9k+, for recruiting the au pair, doing her immigration paperwork, and matching her with a family. You know what you might be right, I did do an envelope calc and that works out to about $900 USD after tax, clothes, toiletries, and $20 spending money a weekend. Its a really big impact having the other costs not included and I’ll adjust my perception of au pair the next time I see it come up. Interesting. I mean if all your expenses are completely paid for, that’s basically 19k of banked income. You’d need a much larger income if you were supporting yourself to save that much. You still can’t call it 19k banked. Toiletries, clothes, the odd coffee or other small spends would be deducted but even then it’s not as terrible a deal as the number suggested at first Isn’t it sad that those working for minimum wage still make less then this yet that’s nothing people bat an eye at
