I mean we all have to focus on something at any given time, or else you would be brain dead. Too much focus, too much thought makes it far too difficult to drop your emotions and so many of your thoughts will still be based in ego. I am attempting to reach a state that exists deeper than my ego, deeper than my thoughts about myself, or about other people. A place without frustration, without anger, without sadness. A place of just being, a place of calm, a place of stillness. Once I reach this state is when the real work begins. I will allow the things that cause me pain to enter my mind – I don’t work on them, I don’t “think” about them, I just sit with them. This can be excruciating – I genuinely physically feel the pain in my chest. I just bare it, and sit until it passes – just like other body sensations (itches, tickles, etc). Sometimes it takes multiple sessions, but eventually…I feel that pain in my chest start to fade. Once it has faded away completely, the effect on my conscious, ego-centric mind is reduced so very much in “real life”. This is just one of the things I use my meditation for, but it felt relevant to this conversation.

When it comes to reaching that “state” I can get there almost immediately if I chant, or if I use a certain singing bowl that I have.
