There are more thorough answers in this thread, but I think the most important issue is the marketability of the degree. A STEM degree is almost guaranteed to come with a job, whereas a history degree is not. Companies borrow money against their assets and future earnings, use that money to pay salaries, deduct the interest payments from their taxes, and reap the return that those employees bring. Effectively, when federal interest rates are low, we are subsidizing these companies with our tax dollars. It’s kinda abhorrent, really. That changes the equation for a lot of those jobs. Now that employee’s ROI is no longer greater than their earnings+benefits+the interest on the revolving line of credit that pays their salaries. So, companies just fire them en-masse. By the 10s of thousands. Because they are now an expense instead of an income source. With all of these experienced people suddenly out of work, the competition for available positions becomes much stiffer, and the number of available positions a lot fewer. This not only lowers the salaries they can demand, but it makes it very hard for inexperienced college graduates to compete at all. Ultimately, the US government subsidizing companies that exploit us anyway is a bad idea, and we should never have had such low interest rates for as long as we did. But the side effect of correcting that is also a correction in the job market.

Job placement services tend to only be offered by the most expensive schools, and even then it’s not a guarantee. Anyone can apply for an internship, but just like jobs they are not handed out to anyone who wants one, even if you’re enrolled in a prestigious school.
