It sounds like they didn’t want either and wanted someone who would be productive from the get-go with little to no mentorship(aka they wanted a senior and instead hired an intern lol).

An example task I had an intern do recently was go through a couple internal api docs and have them make them into objects. Super easy task, but it helped get them more familiar with OOP, get more familiar in a language they hadn’t used before, and taught them a bit of how to read API docs.
