They might have thought they had the spare capacity to bring on an intern then realized too late they don’t. Sh*t happens, and people change their minds. I don’t have any advice but if a company fired an intern it’s not worth to worry about it, just pretend that it never happened and keep looking for other internships or try to learn on your own and get a full time job. It feels like shit when you ate let go, I also got let go from an internship (nothing related to cs, I was an electromechanical engineer) and I felt horrible, but tbh if it’s wasn’t for that I wouldn’t be where I am (working as a dev and making way more money than I was going to as an electromechanical engineer I have literally been at my full time dev job for two months and they won’t give me nearly enough tasks because they want to me to keep training on the tech stack until I am ready. Screw those guys man Most US companies can fire non-union employees at will. That said, this is not how to manage or treat an intern, especially since you were up-front with them! If they advertised this as an internship through your university career center, you should definitely report them – they should be delisted.

I’m in Canada, maybe that changes things. I expect practically nothing from 4 month interns. Anything they can do is a bonus. Some fresh eyes and perspective. They’ve probably even done a bit of overtime, broken something, had actual code shipped, and learned enough ropes to get a real job. And yes, we’ve hired quite a few of them. It’s an amazing way to see them in action without long term commitments. I have never heard any hint of them getting fired. I even joke sometimes that if they break something serious we’ll make them write documentation till their contracts end. Head up and keep grinding. I know it’s lame but on the bright side, you saved yourself from that toxicity early. For sure. Where I work, we usually have dozens of interns each summer, and I’ve personally worked with a ton of them. The vast majority of them were inexperienced, but willing to learn and otherwise a joy to work with. The ONLY one I’ve seen fired was a guy let go due to repeated harassing comments and behavior around women (he was warned by HR several times) along with a total lack of productivity due to having his nose in his cell phone when he wasn’t bothering the ladies.
