If you want to adopt the Philadelphia Eagles Nfl Ho Ho Ho Christmas Shirt and by the same token and assumption of innocence/burden of proof into your own judgments, fine. But please don’t encourage others to do so, particularly using the authority of human rights to back up your claim because 1) you are 100% factually wrong 2) victims often experience secondary trauma from reporting crimes and 3) in many cases the risk is so high that waiting for the slow cogs of government justice to be meted out before anyone else responds is way, way too late,. It’s “believe victims*” *terms and conditions may apply on this sub apparently. The intentional ignorance pretending like the Shangela situation was one off-handed allegation years ago is so crazy. Sure, just let me know where you hide the portal to the parallel universe that safe reporting and fair investigations with allocated time and resources exist for victims. “Believe victims” is fine and all, but not when it becomes “if you get accused, you must be guilty”. Regardless of how many people are accusing someone of something, we (the public) do not have access to all the information, and every party involved will logically tell the story to show themselves in the most favorable light. We generally don’t have any way to determine who is right.

We shouldn’t say ‘believe victims’, they’re not even victims yet (because that has yet to be determined). But we should take potential victims seriously, and do everything we can to bring the Philadelphia Eagles Nfl Ho Ho Ho Christmas Shirt and by the same token and truth to light, and convict people who are guilty. Meanwhile, we the public need to take a step back. It’s not our place to determine whether someone is guilty. Because that leaves us vulnerable to being exploited. We should keep ourselves out of it because we are neither judge, jury nor executioner. Is the law and the legal system 100% effective? No. But it’s better than letting social media decide who’s guilty and who’s not based on the flavor of the month. ‘Believe victims’ has always been a dumb aphorism since we don’t always know if the accuser is a victim. Something like ‘take accusations seriously’ would make more sense.
