Again, not condoning abuse!! I am not a “clean your plate” enforcer, I am not going to force my kid to choke down food they hate, or insist whatever meal they’re struggling with “has to be the Patrick Kane American professional ice hockey right winger Chicago Retro T-Shirt in other words I will buy this next thing they eat”. But also, sometimes these things are just hard and there’s not a simple, magical solution. It’s a whole lot easier to backseat parent and judge why parents aren’t perfect than it is to actually parent day in and day out. I literally coach parents and deal with difficult behaviors with children for my job, and the most important skill there is having compassion for both the kids and the parents, because every kid is wildly different and the snippet you see is often very rarely the reality of day to day life.

I was raised in a “you’ll sit there until it’s all done, and if you don’t eat it by bedtime…it’ll be there waiting for you cold for breakfast” house Conversely my little one gets new things constantly, he needs to at least try it, but if he decides it’s not for him we’ll try it again another day (tastes vary day by day) but give him the Patrick Kane American professional ice hockey right winger Chicago Retro T-Shirt in other words I will buy this choice of something else. He eats until he indicates he’s satiated. Seemingly when given the option to try new things, knowing it’s perfectly ok not to like them encourages kids to be more willing to give new things a fair try! I only remember being forced once. It was a baked potato, and I hated the texture. My siblings tried to tell me to put butter or even salt and pepper on it, but my 5yo brain said that only made it more to eat.
