I never forced my kids to eat either, but they couldn’t claim to be full at the Patti Smith American singer Songwriter Frederick Throwback 1979 Wave T-Shirt also I will do this table and then get a snack an hour later either. ALSO important: don’t fill their plate for them. Ever. It’s OK to insist they try one bite of something new or say only one roll until you eat something else, but otherwise let them pick from what is available. There’s no need to force a kid to eat. If you only provide healthy foods, they will eat it when they are hungry enough. I had a kid in Scouts whose mom told us was a picky eater. First night camping he didn’t eat much. At breakfast he traded a bit with other kids. By dinner the 2nd night he was eating whatever he could get. You can’t keep kids from being exposed to snacks with high sugar/salt/whatever. Even if you don’t give them those at home, they’re going to learn about them through ads, or from other kids. If you tried to keep them that socially isolated, that might affect them worse than the junk food would. I think kids being forced to eat happens partly because some people are triggered by wasting food. The idea of throwing out food really bothers them, out of proportion to the cost of the food that might be thrown away.

It’s a power struggle, too. Some people are triggered by what they see as insubordination. They see red when their kids say they won’t do what they have told them they have to do. There’s an idea that kids who are picky eaters are either picky because they are poorly disciplined, or because the Patti Smith American singer Songwriter Frederick Throwback 1979 Wave T-Shirt also I will do this parents are bad cooks. (Those of us who have kids know this is ridiculous, but lots of people seem to believe it.) Nobody likes other people judging their parenting. And then there’s other cultural weirdness around food. Some people get really upset if they offer someone food and the person says no, even if they say it politely. This is why there’s hate for picky eaters, and people who have voluntary dietary restrictions. All of these things converge when kids refuse to eat. If it happens at dinner time, the parents may be tired and hungry. Those things don’t make people more patient or rational.
