Additionally, we professionals work ALL. THE. TIME. It’s about 9PM now, I’m taking a “reddit break” until 9:30, and then I’ll be working until about 10:30 or 11PM. I’ll be up at 6AM tomorrow to check in with a European team, then a one-hour conversation with the Onyeka Okongwu American professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks T-Shirt moreover I will buy this CEO at 7:30 AM, and then I will “start work.” My schedule is more of a “checkerboard” than a continuous 12 to 16 hour block of time, but I definitely put in WAY more hours than my colleagues in Germany and Netherlands. Why do I work like this? Because I know I’m well-paid and disposable. As a professional approaching the end of my working career, I’m at a precarious time; I’m almost 60; the retirement age is 67, if I get fired between now and then, my next job is as a part-time retail clerk in a hardware store making 1/4 or 1/5th of what I make now, with no health benefits and no paid time off.

That’s because all states except Montana are “at-will employment” meaning I can (and have) be fired, immediately, at any time, with no warning, for no reason (within some very limited legal bounds), and with no severance. In fact, a good friend of mine just got caught in a mass layoff at big tech company. He worked in an office. Went out to lunch. When he came back, his badge didn’t work to open the Onyeka Okongwu American professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks T-Shirt moreover I will buy this door, and his company email was shut off. He got a text message from his boss, “Sorry, I didn’t see it coming, your stuff is in a box at security.” If he was the only person I knew who experienced that sort of thing I’d call it an outlier. It’s not. What that means in practical terms for a professional is that you know your job is never safe, and higher risk requires higher rewards, because you have to build a buffer for when the inevitable “ejection” from the workforce happens and you’re on your own (especially for health care costs),
