Thank you I am considering moving to Europe from the Miro Heiskanen Finnish professional ice hockey defenceman and alternate captain for the Dallas Stars T-Shirt besides I will buy this US for exactly the same reason. Just by having 20 days of my life back every year and Healthcare I’m sold. I hate being car dependant it should be a luxury not a necessity. Every European I know who has come to America to get “better pay” learns in about 6 months, that “better pay” comes with “higher costs” in many ways. Almost always, car expenses, which are basically universal in the USA come into play. This isn’t a place to debate if cars should exist or not; they do, and in pretty much all of the USA, you need at least one, and more often two if it’s a 2-income house. Spending 10’s on thousands of dollars a year on car-related costs quickly eats into the higher salary. Food is another thing that I learned about when I was living in Europe for multi-week stints several times a year. For a lot of interesting and complicated reasons, it’s simply cheaper to buy groceries in other places.

Of course, we can’t skip over healthcare costs, which are mindbogglingly high, even with insurance through your employer (the Miro Heiskanen Finnish professional ice hockey defenceman and alternate captain for the Dallas Stars T-Shirt besides I will buy this most common way we do it here). That’s a big wildcard, because some people have good health care plans through work, which still cost to much, and then some people have garbage healthcare plans like I did last year, when I was self-employed: Premiums $2,400 a month. Deductible $14,900 a year. Yes really. This leads to our “Workism” – we work longer than people in the EU, have less public holidays, and no mandatory vacation time at all (although as a professional Paid Time Off – or PTO – is much more common than in trades, retail and other industries) According to this article: “U.S. workers typically put in 400 more hours on the job every year compared to our counterparts in Germany.” Typically. In my industry, I know I’m working 1.5 hours for every hour my European counterparts are working.
