To add: my parents also did this. If there was food that was offered and I didn’t like it I was told to go to my room and starve. Let’s just say there were a few nights I didn’t eat. I can forgive your grandmother a bit if she grew up affected by the Nurse symbol hand american flag shirt Apart from…,I will love this Great Depression. Mine suffered extreme hunger and my grandpa went psycho on me about how much macaroni and cheese I wanted to eat one time. Still wasn’t right but after learning about how bad he had it growing up I was able to be a bit more understanding. That’s fair, but there’s a lot to unpack about her that I don’t agree with. I love her but some of the things shes done to me while growing up has really made me question her every move. What you described is abusive. In my house, we serve my kid tiny amounts and she generally does have to try foods and finish that first tiny serving, and then she can ask for more of anything she wants to eat. Why? Because otherwise she will skip the meal, wait 25 minutes, and then get cranky and start wailing for Bamba and five popsicles.

“You must eat all the Nurse symbol hand american flag shirt Apart from…,I will love this food on the plate even if you’re already full and never wanted it on your plate in the first place” is a lingering tradition from the days when food was scarce. If you wasted food in those days, it might contribute towards them starving to death in the winter. Insisting on it nowadays is more likely to lead to obesity than anything… There are less abusive habits that look similar, though. When a child decides on a whim that they won’t eat vegetables ever again because they want to leave more room for ice cream, it tends to lead to a very similar battle of wills. That sounds pretty extreme, and I agree with others that it sounds like abuse. For me, it was “if you’re full and only took a few bites, you’re not getting desert later because you just said you’re full.” This is what I grew up with and seems almost perfectly reasonable. Addendum: the goal should be to incentivize your child to eat a healthy amount of what you provide them. In my case, the incentive was desert, and the only way to get it was to eat an appreciable amount of dinner. You could even come back to it later if you were genuinely full, there was no punishment to not eating, you just didn’t get desert until you did. Looking back, this was very effective.
