I got signed off for a further two weeks after speaking to the GP yesterday and have checked in with my boss who is continuing to be supportive so I really need to focus on the facts (that it’s okay to take this time to reset/rest) rather than the negative feelings about it. Thanks so much for your words, I’ve been reading them over yesterday and today – it really does help to see it literally written down by someone that’s not me to shake a bit of sense into me! Everything crossed for you. I have been there (am on the outskirts of similar now as well) Be kind to yourself, go easy, expect to be exhausted tonight just from the mental load, but bloody well done for getting stronger and getting support.

Check with HR/their line manager to make sure you don’t inadvertently contradict an agreed plan there, but maybe put in time for a coffee meeting a week or so after they’re back (being really clear in the invite that it’s an informal chat about how you can support him!). Fact you’re senior and not directly in his management chain (if I’m reading the peer comment correctly) might give him reassurance in itself that he’s got support and understanding in the organisation.
