How do you handle it? Chances are THEY are the racist ones always bringing it up for no reason. I’m not sure that threatening to call the police just because someone is “rude” or “hateful” is the right way to handle a situation. I would have just walked away from her then and there. I’d only call police if she actually made threats. The real problem is people don’t know understand the word and just use it for people doing or saying things they don’t like. Kind of how the original meaning of “woke” got hijacked and misconstrued. That will happen to you a lot in retail where you’re mixing with all races. There is no right way to respond, but there are a lot of wrong ways to respond. Never point out what you have done for black people, talk about your black friends or family. That is the wrong way.

The best way to handle it is to avoid it in the first place by never initiating. There is a burden of responsibility you put on yourself by being the first to initiate contact. You lose your plausible denial. It’s been so over and incorrectly used in recent years that when I hear it I just think that person is a complete moron. They are too dumb to think of something legit to say and so mean spirited that they want to throw one of the worst insults in our culture at someone. When they say that, they are just announcing to everyone what a piece of trash they themselves are. According to the Reddits and the Tick Tocks, it’s not possible for Black people to be racist and all claims of racism have legitimacy at minimum at the level of systemic and pervasive racism for years and years.
