This all ended when I got sick of it around 9-10 years old, and started shoving my finger down my throat right there at the Move over boys let this old man show trucker skull shirt and I love this table as soon as the words left their mouths. A few exorcist – reenactments, and they left me to my own devices. When I was finished eating, I could leave of my own accord. Yeah we just say if you don’t finish your food no bed time snack… it’s to make sure they actually eat vs just trying to eat unhealthy food all the time. Both of my parents were War immigrants and I am the only american-born child of theirs. I grew up with the whole “eat everything on your plate no matter what” or else I would get a beating, but also being berated for being fat which I can remember being called by my mother as young as three or four years old. This was the start of a lifetime of serious eating disorders and body dysmorphia that I am always going to live with. Some parents are just really good at passing on their traumas to their kids. I have two teenagers now and I never make them eat anything they don’t want to eat, but I’ve also taught them how to cook so that way if they don’t want to eat when I’m eating they can fend for themselves.

My wife has a 6yo and it definitely takes some coaxing, encouragement, bribery, whatever you want to call it. It can get super frustrating but i think we’ve got a good system down and she’s a good eater. It is, and I see this in all of the top comments here, but none of them are answering why. It’s often one of two things. 1. It’s a power/control thing that bad parents see as being necessary to get the kids to ask “how high” when told to jump. 2. It’s a generational holdover from a point in history where your ancestors lived in poverty. One common source of this today in the US is the Great Depression. Back then, if you were parents barely scraping by to keep your family alive, you quite literally could not afford for ANY food to go to waste, and this was at a point where if you were that poor, you almost certainly didn’t have a way to save leftovers like a refrigerator. Meals were irregular, getting enough food to feed the family was a blessing. So if your kid sat at the table, ate two thirds of what you gave them, and then stopped, it wasn’t an option. You had to force that kid to take in as many nutrients as possible at that sitting because it was often unpredictable when you would be able to present them with another full plate, and not maximizing that intake whenever you could had the potential to lead to malnutrition. The kids often didn’t understand that at a young age, they just learned that “Even if I’m full, I have to clean my plate. Those are the rules.” So they then grow up, and even if they get to a point where they’re financially stable, when they have kids, they pass on that requirement. Not because they think their kids will starve, but because those are the rules.
