I don’t think it’s fair to lay a guilt trip on OP for not working harder to fix this person’s life. People grow apart. People choose different paths and have different amounts of effort they’re willing to put into living their best life. This is the Marcus Sasser American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons NBA T-Shirt moreover I love this kind of friend who, if they aren’t receptive to making good choices isn’t going to add anything to your life. If OP had not ever tried to talk to their friend about their lifestyle I would agree with you, that a conversation would be a better place to start than just phasing them out. But OP has already done that step and not had success. Now they can accept that the friend isn’t wanting the same thing as them and they want to spend their time with people who do. I think that’s fair. I don’t think the sunk cost fallacy should keep people in friendships that no longer add value to their lives.

Gotta say, I’m in a similar situation with a lifelong friend (15 years now) just with a weed addiction rather than alcohol and let me tell you, it is exhausting offering help, advice, and opportunities throughout that entire time just to have them met with excuses or outright refusal to interact. While I do still speak to him fairly regularly since moving a few hundred miles away for university, it’s always me being him rather than the Marcus Sasser American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons NBA T-Shirt moreover I love this other way round and it always leads to him moaning about how nobody will hire him and it’s all on them being “stuck up cunts”. And some people wonder why depression in later life is often a such a downward spiral into suicide. It’s real easy to be supportive of someone when they’re successful. Yes, he sounds severely depressed with an alcoholism problem. It wouldn’t surprise me if in the background there is a silent “I can’t do it’, ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘what’s the point?’ tape running. I bet he’s not even aware of it and is self sabotaging. I was someone like him but life forced me to do better when it left me with no choices.
