All you can do is ask, they can always say no. With that said I applied for a job where they knew my salary, they still sent through a low ball (HR might have had a policy to start at the Los Angeles Lakers Geats Lebron Kobe Magic Shirt In addition,I will do this low end which was below my current salary). I countered to the $$ I had originally told them that I would accept and why. They finally accepted. The difference was about $14K Feels like you didn’t actually share your minimum expectations with them. “Prefer” higher range isn’t the same as the “lowest I am willing to consider is X.” They insulted you on purpose because they already intend to give the job to someone else, and don’t want to appear like they are handing it to them. This happened to me twice with two potential employers. I tried to negotiate with Employer A who offered me 5k less than what I was making at that time and they told me they felt it was a competitive offer, blah blah. I declined.

Employer B also offered me less than what I was earning and due to so many other red flags throughout the Los Angeles Lakers Geats Lebron Kobe Magic Shirt In addition,I will do this interview, I didn’t bother negotiating and walked. Point being: I would counter. If they don’t give you want you want, decline and keep looking. Ultimately you’re in the power position here as you are currently employed earning a good salary and aren’t desperate. Taking a pay cut is taking a step back (unless you’re unemployed and need a job or are in an egregious situation with your employer). Counter. “I’m sorry this doesn’t quite meet my expectations of 106k that the job was listed at. I would not be able to accept less than what was originally expected. The current offer of 85k is not only below market value for this role but less than my current salary today.”
