The only negative is that as a military Reservist, I have to give up my Tricare Reserve. Whomp whomp. But my agency took my increased premiums into account and fought for an ATM for me, so that extra salary helps offset this. For me, it was a no brainer. For some people, given their field and market, it makes sense to stay private. You do you, boo. The leave days is why I stay. The health insurance after retirement was the biggest draw for my husband and I, but other than that, it’s kind of a wash. In fact, compared to what my two sisters get as benefits at their private sector jobs, Federal benefits are laughable. They are analysts who work at the same company that provides short and long term disability after 30 days of service. They have incredibly low health insurance premiums and great coverage that started on Day 1 of their employment. Their annual and sick leave are awarded in a lump sum at the beginning of the year instead of having to accrue over time. They work fully remote and on a maxi flex schedule and the employee match for their 401K is higher than the Federal government offers with TSP. All of these things came in super handy when one of them was diagnosed with Stage 3 leiomyosarcoma at day 42 of employment. She was able to go on short term disability while recovering from surgery and was able to work a fairly decent schedule while doing radiation treatments thanks to remote + maxi flex scheduling. Her insurance covered nearly everything for her treatments with very low out of pocket expenses for her. Her annual and sick leave are essentially intact because she didn’t have to burn through them before she qualified for short term disability.
