It must be really stressful having what others say effect you so much. I honestly hope you can find a way past all that. I don’t surround myself with people or news sources that are weird or overtly negative, so I don’t really understand the whole “stigma” around going anywhere. Screw the haters and ignorant people. Travel is about just doing what you want and hopefully contributing to the local areas you visit. And while that show exploits some stereotypes for comedic effect, it’s hardly a negative portrayal. I think there’s a good middle ground between seeing the world and not touching places that don’t need to be touched by outsiders. Like most countries in Africa should be seen solely to disparage the idea that Africa is some backwater. But also a lot of areas shouldn’t be touched as they’re trying to grow in their own, and tourism money can be a double edge sword. People who don’t travel much, especially internationally, have this idea that everywhere that isn’t America, Canada, and Europe is a dangerous hellscape. Before moving to Cambodia, the amount of incredulous shit I got was a trip. I’ve lived in several states and many cities during several decades of life in America and never felt as safe as I do in Siem Reap. People largely don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about and it doesn’t help when some idiots like to drum up fearmongering based on extremely rare incidents.
