I don’t think it’s really a poor people having old cars thing since a compliant car wont cost much. TfL will straight up give you £2,000 if your car is non compliant and you scrap it, auto trader seems to think there are 3,000 compliant cars within an hour drive of London for under £2,500 so any London resident with a non compliant car can upgrade for essentially free. So does the I Don’t Always Irish Dance Yes I Do St Patrick’s Day shirt in other words I will buy this poor people with an old car reasoning actually hold up much? when other factors such as single occupancy leisure driving (by the wealthier drivers) cause congestion which in turn causes more polluting vehicles to be stuck stationary on the road? Quite a bit harder to set up a system to charge people driving solo. Plus you were just complaining about 5% of people having to pay ULEZ fees but adding a fee to solo drivers would probably make more than 50% of people pay. The 5% non compliant ULEZ vehicles will be reduced to 0% in a couple of years too whereas a solo driving fee will always apply. How? There’s finate road space. Make one set of lights green for longer and that means you’ll make the other sets of lights red for longer and suddenly people waiting at those will be complaining. Pedestrians will have red for longer too which isn’t helping.

Yep let penalise 95% of people instead with disgusting fumes causing stunted lungs and asthma in kids. Fantastic logic I’m fairly sure it’s not penalising anyone apart from people too ignorant or too dumb to buy a compliant car. Especially considering there is the government cashback scheme for scrapping your non compliant car. A lot of the complainers aren’t Londoners, so aren’t compliant. Really they should be getting unhappy to e.g. Essex County Council for not expanding the scrappage scheme to their jurisdiction The 5% non compliant cars aren’t “the poorest”. In fact the only person I know with a non compliant car is on well over £100k. The poorest disproportionally suffer from the state of London’s air. They’re the one living on the busiest thoroughfares, in the most built-up, least green corners of London. Which, in turn, impacts child health. Nothing like poor childhood health to put pressure on health services and long-term prospects for the next generation. It does seem a bit much to spend all this money on cameras, software etc when it’s 5% of cars. Why not let the already existing systems up them up, don’t police cars already pick up cars without insurance etc. Newsflash: most of the poorest people in London don’t own cars in the first place, either they can’t afford somewhere to park it, or the upfront cost is too high to justify versus just using public transport, cycling or walking
