I made $8 in ‘gold’ coins that day and I felt like a true pirate with my booty. I still have them stored somewhere lol. Similarly, I found myself with a ton of half dollars. I just use them as tooth fairy money for my kids. Seriously that was what made me stop using them. Machines acted like I was putting in a fake coin and rejected them, or ate them. It would have been impossible to get everyone on board to change over the machines pre-emptively. And frankly, it doesn’t much matter anymore. Better to convert things to accept tap or phone or whatever at this point. I kinda love that we have these weird edge case currencies that are legal tender but just don’t really work in society.

I had some dumbass cashier threaten to call the Happy pills tweety bird shirt But I will love this cops on me for trying to pay with a $2 bill because (I quote) “there’s no such thing as a $2 bill!” For my nephew’s 7th birthday a couple of months ago, I got a D&D dice bag and put $20 in quarters and $25 in dollar-coins in it. I went and saw the force awakens in IMAX and got change for parking in gold dollars, surprised the heck out of me. I recall the time I found a vending machine that was loaded incorrectly, and was dispensing these as quarters. Ended up trading all my extra dollars for free sodas and more cash. Our laundrymat and carwash both despensed and accepted them all the way until the pandemic. Token only ever since that coin shortage. It was easier to change the value of a coin dispenser slot in the computer than it was to add the ability to receive dollar coins. I had a machine at work malfunction and think it was quarters. I needed change and put a dollar in and 4 gold ones came out. I had 5 $ bills. Left with $20 in coin A few years ago there was an ice machine near us that gave change in gold dollars. My father always fed it a $5 bill and amassed a small collection of these coins.
