Anything. There’s absolutely nothing he could do that would make me stop loving him even one iota less. I cannot say that about anyone else in my life. Like if my kid literally did the most vile thing imaginable I would still love him every bit I do now. The thing is, as someone who was childfree well into my 30s and didn’t consider even having kids until then, that new special different love is VERY heavy. To carry around so much love for another person, someone who I would die for without a second thought, isn’t comforting. It’s scary a lot of the time. It’s a cliche but it really is like having your heart running around outside your body haha. Loving someone in any other sort of relationship the way I love my kid would almost be like…weird. I don’t know if overall am happier for experiencing this new kind of love but boy am I changed. When I talk about the responsibility of having kids I’m talking less about the late nights and diaper changes and tantrums and financial aspect because once you have them it’s just stuff you have to do. The real responsibility is the weight of the love you now just carry around every day for the rest of your life. You will always have another person to care about more than you’ve cared about anything and you will always have to know that if anything happens to them your life would be over. I wish I had someone verbalize this to me before having my son, I don’t know if it would have changed anything but I was truly blindsided not by the extent of the love but the weight of it.
