I maintain the failure of the dollar coin in the US is due to it being the largest denomination of coin, meaning you need a pocket full of change to actually buy anything. If it were released in tandem with a $5 & $10 coin, I could see people using them since most modern wallets are geared toward cards anyway. I would—I’d rather grab two tenners when I’m going to the beach to buy some hot dogs & cold drinks, although these days you can just use a smartwatch at many places anyway. I was a pretty young guy and working at one of my first jobs when this coin was released. I thought it was hilarious and used to get 1-2 rolls ($25-$50) of them out of every one of my checks so that I could carry them around in a little leather coin purse and give them to homeless people and shit like some medieval lord. The problem with American Dollar coins is that they are too similar in size and shape to a quarter. Particularly if you are in a hurry and accidentally hand over too much money.
