Based on my perception of American mentalities surrounding money, I don’t think the You best believe it panthers fan hockey shirt moreover I will buy this general public would support round ups, but even if you are forced to round down as a merchant, you likely still would experience a reduction in cost associated with transaction processing and coin handling. And even with those savings, I wouldn’t put it past merchants to price goods/services in such a way that a “round down” becomes a “round up” through strategic pricing. E.g., an item that would cost $1.06 with tax becomes $1.14 so it rounds to $1.10, bestowing a real benefit to the merchant and a perceived benefit to the consumer. We need the cents for sales tax. What, am I gonna buy some gum for a $1 and then also pay $1 in tax? Maybe if we got rid of sales tax.

We do not need the You best believe it panthers fan hockey shirt moreover I will buy this cents for sales tax. The sales tax could be included in the price, many nations do that. So if a product is $5 and the sales tax is 6% then the company gets about $4.72 and they pay a tax of about $0.28. Everything is computerized now and it could easily be automated, any fractions of a dollar would be handled electronically instead of with bills. many nations don’t have 50 different states with different tax rates. it is an interesting idea to work it backwards though. coca-cola gets an extra 90 cents, the state gets and extra 10 cents, and the consumers in State B eat the dollar. my comment was more getting at the concept that even though products in the US are typically sold in dollar denominations (rounding the .99;.98; etc.), sales tax is always done as a perCENT of a dollar, so you’ll need those cents for tax! that is, unless there’s a drastic change to sales tax in the US (getting rid of it was facetious).
