I love these. In high school the Cow The Only Person Really Scared Myself shirt and by the same token and vending machines would credit you a dollar when you put these in, but treat them as quarters when giving change. I bought so many bags of chips and left with more money than I started with. No one I knew would spend them. They collected them like they’re going to be valuable someday. And no vending machines would take them, so might as well put them in a jar. I got a lot of them in Utah while using the public transportation system. Only place I ever seen them in circulation Me and many others bought, in some cases, literally 10s of thousands of dollar coins via credit card for the points and then just sold them back to the bank. Paid for a few vacations till the mint and card providers got wise sometime around 2010 or so and took away the CC option.

Most vending machines weren’t set up to accept them. Toll booths, which at the Cow The Only Person Really Scared Myself shirt and by the same token and time were pretty much all cash based and involved tossing coins or tokens into a chute, weren’t set up to accept them (I heard of at least one case where it jammed the machine–oops!). There’s no slot for them in most standard cash registers. And they’re kind of heavy and large, which helps distinguish them from other coins and coin-like objects but makes them annoying to carry around. Calling it a failure is inaccurate. The gov’t, from time to time, has attempted to move Americans to using coins for dollars, as our Canadian neighbors did years ago. The logic was that it was cheaper on a per-dollar basis to use coins, rather than paper dollars. That math has changed in recent years, due to improvements in technology. Paper dollars are now cheaper to use, overall. So, the ‘failure’ to replace paper dollars with coins was actually a financial success.the only way dollar coins are going to go mainstream in the u.s. is to go cold turkey and just quit printing $1 bills. same with eliminating the penny, or even the nickel–just stop making them.
