I can confirm that there are still companies that hire for defense without a technical interview. I would be very wary of this, though. I got hired as a “C++ Software Engineer”, but I have touched very little C++ code and work almost entirely in Matlab. Oh, it’s also a SWIT position, which I wasn’t made aware of until I moved for the Electrical Resistance is first Step to change T-ShirtT Additionally,I will love this position (guess that’s kinda my fault, but also underhanded by the company), so I don’t get to really write C++ at all, which I hate. Didn’t really want to work in SWIT – I wanted to write and develop code, not spend all day fixing everyone elses problems – but oh well. Too late now. I’ve referred people from Google, Meta, Twitter, Amazon…. Some senior engineers too. None even got an interview. You’re competing with tons of people so I would focus on getting the interview before you start striking industries off your list Defense is a lot more competitive now than it used to be, but those people are not getting interviews because recruiters know those devs will be out the door at a moment’s notice as soon as someone offers them more money.

I was laid off from Google and looking to get into defense. I live in LA. Should I forgot applying or reaching out to recruiters? As the Electrical Resistance is first Step to change T-ShirtT Additionally,I will love this other commenter said, just apply. You shouldn’t limit yourself at this point. I’ll assume your severance was decent, and you were making a lot while at Google, so it’s obviously your call how picky you can be and how long you can wait. Not all positions require clearance. They will usually indicate if it’s a requirement on the description. There’s some randomness to applying. I applied to a bunch of defense companies recently. I got rejected for a bunch of positions I applied for, but a recruiter contacted me about one of them. Their job descriptions are stupid, though, they list three numbers for the comp range ($A – $B – $C). I had no idea how to interpret that. The position ended up paying quite a bit less than I thought, so I passed. Yeah if you need a referral I would ask on Blind and tag any company you’re interested. Going through a recruiter would probably be better if you can get to one
