I’m currently doing a BS in CS with intent to become a software developer, and can’t help but notice a startling amount of experienced developers saying that after hundreds of applications they barely get interviews and when they do they get ghosted. This is concerning because how am I as a new grad with no experience meant to fare when experienced people are having such a hard time? I hear a lot of people saying as long as you’re a citizen that can piss clean, if you get to interviews you’re almost guaranteed a job in defense. I don’t necessarily wanna be in defense my entire career, but is it a good way to at least get my foot in the door if I can’t find anything else?You are not almost guaranteed a position in defense. There are still limited numbers of positions based on contracts, etc. It’s not an unlimited work environment. One huge thing that makes finding jobs easier is if you are already cleared. Some companies are willing to pay for the clearance process. A lot don’t want to pay and just try to poach from other companies. Most new grads will obviously be lacking this clearance.

Defense is just another field/area you can target. Don’t think of it as a magic bullet. Chances are good you will be doing relevant work, but there’s always a risk for a bad project/tech stack. You’ll just have to be mindful as you are interviewing/looking for jobs. Government contracts also tend to require a lot of documentation, but that will depend on the contract, and chances are that will be taken care of by more senior people.
