CIO here. You should never take a dry promotion (promo with new responsibilities and title without pay raise) they of course have the Duncan’s Toy Chest shirt and by the same token and money to pay you – your former boss is off payroll. My advice: stand firm “thank you for the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities. I’m confident that I can exceed your expectations in this new role. Since this new role comes with additional responsibilities, I think that a raise of (15%) is in line with my peers at this level, and commensurate with the requirements of the role” That is corporate speak for ,” You’re never getting a raise, we’ll find an excuse not to give you one then replace you with someone else”. I’ve seen this happen to a friend of mine who was a general manager but being paid as an assistant. He got fed up with the extra workload, and was replaced by another assistant manager who managed not one but two restaurants on an assistants salary. Sounds like BS. They have an immediate need… They trust you enough to dump you into it and make you responsible for, but not pay you for it. It isn’t like they don’t have the money… They just cleared that money by removing your old boss. Do they expect you to do your old job on top of the new one? You would do two levels of work at your old wage.

Duncan’s Toy Chest shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

I have been in your position, I actually accepted the Duncan’s Toy Chest shirt and by the same token and promotion then used that title to launch to another company where I am now making $21k more per year. I wouldn’t do it. If they want to promote you they can give you more money. I’ve been in this boat and six months later I was still fighting for more money and the title I was supposed to have from day 1. If they are asking you to do it with little or no experience that means they don’t have anyone else to do it. Make them give you the raise and title or don’t accept the position. Insist that you get it in writing that you will receive a raise – with a specific amount already negotiated – after 90 days in the position. Make sure to have them include that if any performance review is required before receiving the raise, you are retroactively paid the difference between old rate & new rate for each workday that has passed between 90-day mark and review date.
