I buy so much less than I used to. I can mostly avoid fast fashion and overly trendy pieces. I never worry about repeating an outfit. Besides heels for special occasions, I won’t wear anything that hurts my feet. My jewelry is more minimal and higher quality. Generally the stuff I have is just nicer and I know how to take care of it. I dress for the weather now. Whereas when I was younger, if I wanted to wear e.g. a crop top, I would just persevere through the cold. I went from only ever wearing dark neutral colored tracksuits and pajama type clothes as a teenager to almost exclusively wearing pink, red, white/cream, or purple dresses and skirts at 23. Used to dress in really loud bold and bright colors and patterns in my 20s and early 30s. I loved expressing myself with clothes. Had a major life transition in my late 30s and was trying to adjust and keep my head above water. I (subconsciously?) dressed pretty neutral and more “dressy” than usual at work. I think I was suffering from major imposter syndrome and was trying to project an image of someone who “has it together” and knows what the hell is going on. I’m past that now and love wearing what I feel like, problem is I can’t be bothered to go anywhere where I have to “get dressed”.

My style has shifted multiple times over the Dreams Are Free The Hustle Isn’t Beach Summer Palm Tree Retro T-Shirt moreover I love this years for all sorts of reasons. As for as aging as a factor, I’d say I definitely stopped the more over-the-top goth looks once I hit about 25, but other than that the only consistent trend has been that I’ve increasingly gravitated toward higher-quality basics combined in (I hope) interesting ways. Also, I guess that once I entered my late 40s/early 50s I started to be more careful not to combine pieces in TOO crazy a way: as a friend put it, certain outfits that might have looked cool and bohemian at 30 might lean more towards bag lady at 50, ha. I do still wear some fun stuff, though (shoutout to r/oldhagfashion) Once I turned 30, I said fuck it. I stopped following trends for the most part and wore things to express myself. I stopped focusing on trying to look feminine every day. I stopped putting limitations on my style because of my body type. I stopped telling myself “I can’t wear this” and I just started doing it. I also started spending my money differently. I thrift more often and focus more on indie clothing brands and band merch to support artists. I’ve basically curated a bohemian punk style that’s unique to me and it’s incredibly liberating. i love dressing alternatively but i’m about to go to college and a lot of alt brands aren’t ethical or sustainable 🙁 i want to buy clothes that will last me longer or are more interchangeable but no other style makes me feel like myself, it’s a struggle lol
