Can’t wait to get downvoted to hell but… I work for a large company that pays well and this is incredibly common here. Every company is different and I agree that this can be a manipulative tactic, but how does this normally go at your company? If you’ve never had coworkers expected to do extra work before a raise, I’d say no. But honestly some companies run stuff like this, and even if it’s not right on their part to give you more work without pay now, you’d be glad to have the Dog Sitter What My Customer Says Just Awesome Simply Terrific shirt also I will do this money in 3-12 months when they give you the raise. If done right, these arrangements allow companies to test you out without taking as much risk for you or them. If they give you the raise right away and you don’t perform, you are now a larger liability and more likely to be fired or demoted to cover their ass. Now they’re out a high-level person who was good at their original job, they need to pay to train a replacement, and you’re unemployed.

In your scenario, if you don’t do well the Dog Sitter What My Customer Says Just Awesome Simply Terrific shirt also I will do this worst that will happen is they’ll ask you to return to your role. If you go this route, check in often with your manager about expectations and timelines, and update your resume. Do not do it without 20% raise minimum, in writing, up front. Been there done that twice. First time I got ZERO. Second time I got 5%, ended up working 50% more and hated it so much I quit in 8 months. I understand why companies do this when promoting from within, especially when it’s reactive to the loss of another employee (not that I agree with it, necessarily), but yes you should protect yourself. I would recommend requiring a hard deadline. Whatever you feel comfortable with; a month, maybe two, but I wouldn’t go any longer than that. After that point, if you are still filling that role you should get the full title and a pay rate at least matching your old boss. Reach out to them and ask what they were making if you’re on good terms. Whether or not they give you the title, add it to your resume. You filled the position, so you have the experience.
