Step 6 once you put your 2 weeks in, no backing out. Regardless of which scenario it is, you decided it wasn’t worth it, even if they throw more money at it. Because honestly why wasn’t that money on the Do You Feel Jolly Christmas Elf shirt it is in the first place but table the first time? You taking the job makes it easier to get offers, we know companies are insane and don’t want to hire someone for a job they haven’t already done. If they don’t pay you for it the next one will. I’m not suggesting you be the companies bitch, which is why you job hunt in 6 months. 6 months with a new role and responsibilities and no raise is a small price to pay to open the door somewhere else that will pay you. Every job I’ve ever had I got because I chose to take on new things and then when they don’t pay I find someone who will. It’s worked like a charm This happened to me, I asked for a date I will officially get the job and a bonus. They gave me a bonus for not promoting me immediately and then raise 6 months later. I did get the title at day 1, they didn’t give it to me but I took it.

I would recommend getting some kind of hard timeline in writing. Something like, ‘In 3 months, if ___ has done well in the Do You Feel Jolly Christmas Elf shirt it is in the first place but role, they will get ____ raise. Otherwise, they will not maintain in said role. In the meantime, use that new role on your resume to apply for positions that actually pay more. Then, see what opportunity comes to you first. So this is hard, and I think super context dependent. I work in software, and have been trying to figure out how to get to a Director title, and most (not all) of the people in those positions who I’ve talked to described getting there through some form of ‘do the job before we give you the title’. On the other hand, it’s tremendously difficult to protect yourself in those situations. You need to demand the raise up front. They’re asking you to assume more responsibilities that constitute a higher pay grade. If you don’t make that clear they will treat you like a door mat.
