You have really good answers here. One point I dont see is effort and exposure. In Portugal since kids we have spanish influences, be cartoons, movies, music, some restaurants, etc. We are used to pass by our neigbours and try to let out some spanish. “Hola como estás?” is almost a mix of portuguese and spanish that both countries understand and in Portugal we tend to joke a bit with this sentences. My personal experience is that the Do Whatever Floats Your Boat It Doesn’t Sink Mine shirt in contrast I will get this same dosent hapen in Spain, we can have 3 or 4 cartoon characters speaking spanish for the sake of it, they will have all of them spanish an 0 portuguese. The exposure of our culture on their side is way less. And then there is the effor part and this I am talking about personal experience here, take it as it is. As I said early im portugal whe tend to like and try the spanish accent, never saw a spanish friend try to even let a portuguese word like “Caralho” (and its one of the words we love to teach to otsiders). Had a teacher in University that she worked ther for 6 year prior to my starting year, every old student tried to get a portuguese word from her, nothing. She literaly teaching in a portuguese university for years withought even haven spoken a portugueses word. She only speaks spanish, fully understands portuguese (I never spoke spanish to her either) and admits that she dosent want to take the effort to try our language “you understand me just fine I have nothign to change, if you dont understan learn spanish we are a way bigger country” was her words when asked. Its not a all spanish are like this, but is my personal experience with this topic.

Behind that is the Do Whatever Floats Your Boat It Doesn’t Sink Mine shirt in contrast I will get this others explanations you got here, probably portuguese is just harder, plus the trade of for them knowing how to speack it is not necessery. This, as a Portuguese person. Whenever we wanna watch some type of international media, unless it’s a children’s movie, we gotta watch it with subtitles or fully in another language. Spanish, English and just Brazilian Portuguese all being options to us. We rarely find things in pt pt. Spain and Brazil are quite big on dubbing stuff so there’s a lot less need for learning other languages/variations of our language. Brazilian Portuguese is almost an accent to us although there’s some different words. Portuguese and Spanish are so similar that originated the most spoken hibrid language in the world, Portunhol. Mostly spoken on the borders between Brasil and Argentina it is also spoken around the border between Portugal and Spain. Funny enough, same thing happens with Brazilian Portuguese. Brazillian Portuguese speakers have difficulty understanding European Portuguese, but not the other way around.
