Instead of European Portuguese speakers I should’ve just said Portuguese people, probably more accurate. We can understand Brazilian and Spanish people without problem, but they have a lot of trouble understanding us. Because, Portuguese sounds like Spanish being spoken by deaf person. It’s easy for Portuguese speakers to understand when the Everyone needs a smart sarcastic bartender service shirt besides I will buy this other speaker is just speaking a language that sounds like their own if it was spoken clearly, but it doesn’t work as well going the opposite direction. Isn’t it curious how Portuguese speakers seem to grasp Spanish effortlessly, while Spanish speakers often struggle with Portuguese comprehension? It’s a linguistic puzzle that has intrigued many. I have no idea mate, but it’s true. Every time I speak with Portuguese people in online games they’re able to understand Spanish. Sometimes they even prefer Spanish rather than English! However when I’m queued with Portuguese people to speak anything but Portuguese (not many tbh) it’s hard for me to understand it. Like, I can get some things but it’s not like the other way around.

Spanish speaker here, albeit as a second language. While I do understand some Portuguese and have no trouble recognizing it when I hear or read it, it’s a challenging language for me. It’s almost like speaking Spanish with extra flair and “zzhuzh” sounds added in. I’ve found that I can usually understand it just fine when I read it, but hearing it is a whole other thing. There’s a high mutual intelligibility between Portuguese and Spanish but it’s asymmetrical. Spanish has less vowels (5) compared to Portuguese (at least 12), so it’s harder for Spanish speakers to understand spoken Portuguese when there’s a larger phonemic inventory and have phonemes that aren’t found in Spanish.
