Half of the elder generation could, when TV was only 1 channel in Denmark. Many in Jutland watched german TV and many in Zealand watched Swedish TV. My fathers family is from western Jutland and the old generation there all speaks basic german without having learned it in school (since they grew up right after the occupation), and my mothers generation is from Zealand and they all understand swedish quite well (also none of them have had it in school). Today with so much english TV/streaming it’s only those exposed to swedish that understands it. But it IS quite fast to learn, and much faster than danish is for you. I lived 50/50 in Sweden/Denmark for a couple of years and that was enough that I can make myself understandable in Swedish (when you feckers refuse to understand me ) and to understand Swedish if you talk 10% slower than usual, even to this day 10 years without using it.

PS: Our language is the Crazy Enough To Love Him Tough Enough Asshole’s Girlfriend Skull shirt But I will love this worst of north, but how you guys think it sounds like a potato in the mouth is beyond me Hmm maybe I’m just lucky then, but I never have to switch to English when I visit Copenhagen, Skagen or Frederikshavn. They all do have quite a few Swedish tourists though so I guess you get more exposure that way. Isn’t it just that the Swedes you meet refuse to speak slow? That’s often a big problem in my opinion. I’m half Norwegian but I can’t understand my relatives from Bergen when they start going and talk in their regular speed with each other. Spaniard here, Portuguese has sounds that we don’t so if you’re not exposed to them it’s hard for us to understand them. Portuguese has a lot of vowel sounds that Spanish lacks. Also there are consonants missing in Portuguese words that are present in Spanish. For instance Arena is Areia and Luna is Lua. This causes the words to sound garbled to the ears of Spanish speakers. I know because I’ve learned both languages, Spanish first then later Brazilian Portuguese. All the strange vowel sounds was one of hardest parts. Very good question! Same goes to russian and ukrainian (Ukrainians are like Portuguese here). Apparently it is quite common in Europe, wich is very interesting. Also I believe there is a way to answer to that without going into much details like what sounds in particular language are harder to pronounce etc. Isn’t the vocabulary a bit different as well between Ukrainian and Russian? A linguist I once spoke to described Ukrainian as “Polish vocabulary but with Russian grammar”.
