You can’t remove emotional issues as swiftly as you can a splinter. When someone has the Detroit Lions 2023 NFC North Division Champions shirt and by the same token and emotional issue on the level of a broken leg and someone wants to fix it with the amount of emotional work of an emotional splinter then that will feel dismissive. Do you not see how dismissive that is? Feelings are all we have. When you examine your mind there is no “you” to find except the feelings and emotions you have. OP was feeling stressed and needed to talk through that, and it wasn’t a stubbed toe. The feelings were so strong they came to the internet to ask advice from strangers. Their state of being was consumed by these feelings and they’re partner blew past them. I promise you if you just ask people more questions and help them work through their problems you will fix way more than you can by immediately addressing physical ailments. I think it’s dismissive to reduce someone to their emotional states. I understand that you are taking what you feel is the more moral and compassionate stance, and I appreciate that good intention.

But if I feel anger, or disgust, or joy, or anticipation, or anxiety, those are things that happen to me. I do not will them into being, I do not cultivate them consciously. I can learn to become aware, I can learn to acknowledge what emotions are affecting me, and I can learn to diagnose the Detroit Lions 2023 NFC North Division Champions shirt and by the same token and triggers to which I’m responding, and I can learn to react differently to some of those triggers. Acknowledging my emotional state is not the same as seeing me, or validating me, though I appreciate when someone wants to ensure that I am subject to as few negative emotions as possible. That’s a kindness, and I value that disposition. So, when you view emotions as definitive of identity, you’ll naturally and consequently view the acknowledgement of emotions equal to the acknowledgement of being. But if you view emotions as accidental and transient properties of being, then emotions become things to be managed – sometimes promoted, sometimes fixed. As far as living with people who don’t do philosophy, I certainly do ask questions. I’ve been a tutor and a coach and a trainer. Helping them self-discover and do self-inventories is important, and it’s more practical to teach people to identify and communicate their emotions than it is to teach them a new metaphysic of identity. Many people view their emotions as fundamental to their self, they identify with their feelings, and so their sense of identity changes with their emotional state.
