And there’s stuff we only learn with experience, be ours (though making mistakes, which sometimes means punishment, unemployment, anxiety, “you can do better” talks from the big boss etc.) or by learning from other colleagues and seniors. Not having those really stunts our professional development. I completely understand. I joined a startup in August 2019, which was a literal startup at the time. I was the second developer, and the first developer was also a fresh graduate like me, and we were classmates. To add to the challenges, our project manager didn’t even have an IT or CS background. However, at that time, I needed the money due to my father’s unemployment and my brother’s illness, so I decided to stay despite these red flags. I hoped that things would change, but unfortunately, they never did, and now it’s negatively affecting my career.I couldn’t quit earlier because I was bound by a contract that lasted for three years, which finally ended in January 2023. Since then, I have been actively searching for new job opportunities, but I am still here at the moment. They never raised my salary and, in fact, it was even lowered. I am still applying for junior web developer roles, but it has been quite challenging.This experience is the biggest regret of my entire life. However, it brought me here to Japan, so I just have to try and brush up my japanese skills to get me a new job but yeah it’s difficult, I have failed multiple times in interview and technical questions because of my lack of knowledge in the devops, and new techstacks, and my japanese is daily conversational level at best. I sometimes contemplate on going home to my home country or changing careers,

Oof. I would never work for Japanese or Chinese company. Their cultures work you to death. You’re in a double bad boat. I can’t upvote this enough. After my first year on the Brooks jr high school alumni shirt Besides,I will do this job I was part of Covid layoffs. Still very much a junior but was desperate for work. Found a job at a small tech company about a month later. Only one dev at the company but he was more of a dev ops guy who coded because they didn’t have many other options. Super intelligent guy but slowly started moving away from the dev work to focus on security in the company. Soon it was just me doing most of the dev work. I quickly found myself with no one to ask questions to and had to entirely rely on my researching to make decisions. Thankfully I ended up getting really good at researching solutions but it’s ultimately why I left the company after a couple of years. I was still a junior engineer but had zero mentorship on the coding side of things and knew if I stayed I would stagnate. Having a team of developers around you is super crucial at the beginning of your career. I’m now the most junior dev on my team and switching jobs has paid dividends for my career growth
