I mean, the drawing of the eastern states looks like most of Europe, while the western ones looks sorta like the lines drawn in Africa? The east coast was the organic outgrowth of colonies. The western states were carved up on a map from territories. In addition to what others are saying about natural barriers, we also had generations of monarchs approving colonial charters that contradicted each other. Pennsylvania and Maryland both had overlapping claims, Massachusetts and Connecticut had charters extending to the west coast, etc. The land was also poorly surveyed. That line you mention does not have a name. Just to the east of it, from Minnesota down to Louisiana, is the Mississippi River.

Thats why most states out west have straight line square-ish borders unless theres a natural feature like a mountain or river. Eastern states developed organically and contoured to the terrain and other natural features, not grids. You could’ve figured it out in the time it took to make your humorous simile. But I yield to the spirit of the sub. Eastern borders were established much earlier so it’s based on natural lines. It’s also why they’re so much smaller than western states It matches the roads. Roads in the Midwest are grids of straight lines for miles. Roads in the northeast are a bunch of squiggly, overlapping nonsense.
