Remember, some parts of our government are based on population – 2 senators and some number of congressmen per state. The people drawing borders knew that at some point there would be more people in those new states, and they had to pay attention to that. For example, if you had one giant but sparsely populated state, it would still get only 2 senators. If that state gained population over time, you end up with one large state with a lot of people…that still has only 2 senators. Pre civil war, it was important to consider if the Official dragon Ball 40 Years 1984-2024 Toriyama Akira Thank You For The Memories Signature shirt in addition I really love this state would allow slavery or not, and how the state would count free slaves – since they also effect the population numbers, and how much representation a state has in Congress. I believe there was also a certain minimum population to be added as a state. Not a lot, for sure, but that’s part of why a lot of the map was various territories that carved up over time into states—as a certain area started to gain significant US-citizen settlement, it would start having a better case for statehood. (With the exception of Utah, which waited decades longer than they might have, because of all the polygamy and other theocratic stuff that got the early Mormon pioneers chased out of the east and Midwest in the first place. Once they dropped that, they got to join too.)

For a while, freed slaves were counted as 3/5ths of a person when determining a states overall population, and therefore representation in congress. (Yes the Official dragon Ball 40 Years 1984-2024 Toriyama Akira Thank You For The Memories Signature shirt in addition I really love this irony of determining representation of people who could not vote in the first place. It was a direct move to get southern states with high slave populations greater representation in congress.) Surveyor here. To add to this, the eastern states/original colonies are metes and bounds states. Basically property was divided by saying Joe Smith owns from that oak tree to the river, along the river to so and so’s property, then back to the oak tree. Then in Ohio, the public land survey system started which created a way to efficiently survey and sell the land thus creating the nice straight lines seen farther west. That is a very high level overview however.
