Putting in hours isn’t the BASEBALL LEGEND shirt in other words I will buy this only thing that matters, however when you are getting established it often pays to be seen visibly seen around a little longer than bare minimum. This is so true. Unfortunately, corporate culture is more about appearances rather than actual performance. Bad managers, which are rampant, perpetuate poor expectations and set a lackluster work culture. Do your work, send your early morning email when you get in, and then document ALL of your accomplishments. And then, note them casually in the office to folks, but don’t rub it in aggressively. It will slowly change the metric from working late to getting results. Then when you get some good PR and leverage, you can shift schedule around more easily. I’m the early on early off person in my office. I do all of this and never have a problem, even got myself a 30% raise this cycle.

It’s so frustrating that arriving early doesn’t “count” with people because it never occurs to them that you have been in hours already, especially if they woke up right before coming in. But leave before they do and everyone notices. I had a team lead argue with me once that coming in early is pointless, because real work doesn’t get done until he’s there and tasks it. So even if you got in at 6am, he came in at 9 so you better be staying until 5 like him or you aren’t working.
