Just tell you are not interested for personal reasons and if they keep asking tell them you have anxiety issues, that is what I did. I’m also dreading/looking forward to the Angry Runs Bears D’onta Foreman shirt besides I will buy this day I’m leaving for similar reasons. No hate or anything, I just don’t want to pretend to care. I have work friends, but maybe 3 people in almost 6 years have become friends I’ll keep in touch with outside of work. I prefer the closure of a “goodbye.” I’ve left jobs where there were people I actually hated where I was glad I did this later. I find farewells exhausting, so approve of skipping it. Leave a nice, brief, note out to everyone you want to say goodbye to, and move on.

There is nothing “wrong” about not wanting a party. It’s your right not to, and no one will throw you in jail for declining. I got laid off from a company once, they offered us all a bonus if we stayed on for 4 weeks to help train our replacement team from India. I got the Angry Runs Bears D’onta Foreman shirt besides I will buy this bonus, and at the final goodbye luncheon I ordered the market price lobster with extra sides. Some people were too angry at the company to attend the lunch, I was pissed too, but that was a really tasty lobster that I still have fond memories of. I’ve worked at toxic places that did farewell lunches (although not for everybody who left). The lunches felt very phony – just a way for the boss to try to pretend that past grievances were all in the past and were solved. We had a few lunches where the honoree did not show up – those felt the same as the lunches where the honoree did show. After we had two or three honorees no-show, the company quit doing the lunches altogether. In my case, I had a surprise farewell lunch. I had gotten laid off during a major layoff, so no farewell lunches for me or the other thirty of us. But about a week later, a former coworker contacted me and asked me to meet him for lunch. I got there and was greeted by seven former coworkers (who had survived the layoff) who hosted a farewell lunch for me. I was truly touched. No former bosses attended, and my coworker later told me that he was lightly reprimanded about my lunch. Attend your farewell lunch if you can ignore the turnout (or lack thereof). You will see who your real friends are, as well as possibly a few who think that office politics might work out for them if they attend. It can be useful information later, when former coworkers or bosses ask you for favors (such as explaining your work after you’ve left, or references for new jobs). If they pay for your lunch then at least you have that.
