Defense can also be a good way to get a foot in the Aleksej Pokusevski Basketball Poster Thunder T-Shirt moreover I love this door at larger companies. Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are all hiring engineers with security clearances. It depends on the level of clearance! A “Secret” one is usually a background check and a few references, but a “Top Secret” one is a much more thorough investigation and can take over a year to be granted. You have to list a few people from every job you’ve had, school you’ve gone to and places you’ve lived. You get assigned an investigator who calls those people and asks all of them if they know other people who also know you, and then calls those people too. Basically just asks about whether they’ve seen you committing any crimes you haven’t disclosed Or whether you would be the type of person to get drunk and spill secrets. Yes. If u get a job requiring a clearance, Google, Amazon, or Microsoft will snatch u up with the quickness after a few years experience. They love poaching DoD talent. Please also remember that defense isn’t an open door. Budgets exist and it isn’t as easy anymore. Not enough war going on I guess? But I wouldn’t write it off. Have u looked at some of the intelligence agencies? Not all of them are “DoD” but may work with them in some form or fashion.

Do you have a 3.5+ GPA (preferably 3.7+)? Because defense doesn’t care about leetcode, but they prefer ppl with good grades But you have to understand that the Aleksej Pokusevski Basketball Poster Thunder T-Shirt moreover I love this tech job market goes up and down. And the ups last much longer than the downs. So, just because, at this particular time, the job market isn’t great; that doesn’t mean that, when you graduate, that the job market will be bad. There’s a lot of talent out there looking for jobs due to the FAANG+ layoffs… Everything will be competitive… This. The focus on industry needlessly complicates everything. Don’t remove yourself from hiring pools for no damn reason. Frankly it’s an excellent time to look to defense, there is an insane amount of money flooding into projects that support the effort in Ukraine as well as overall force modernization. The defense contractor I work at has been hiring at high pace for 18 months, decent amount of new grad/junior positions You are not guaranteed to get into defense even if you can “piss clean”. Nothing is guaranteed, all decent paying jobs are competitive. Yes, get your foot in the door if your foot isn’t in any doors already. It’s better than being homeless Absolutely, anecdotally I started out in defense for two years after college, then moved to FAANG. Getting interviews was so much easier with those years of experience, and I learned a lot in that time too. Defense is a valid career path, and not a bad one – it can pay well, and if you can get a security clearance you are very likely to have steady work.
