I was laid off from Google and looking to get into defense. I live in LA. Should I forgot applying or reaching out to recruiters? I’ll assume your severance was decent, and you were making a lot while at Google, so it’s obviously your call how picky you can be and how long you can wait. Not all positions require clearance. They will usually indicate if it’s a requirement on the description. There’s some randomness to applying. I applied to a bunch of defense companies recently. I got rejected for a bunch of positions I applied for, but a recruiter contacted me about one of them. Their job descriptions are stupid, though, they list three numbers for the comp range ($A – $B – $C). I had no idea how to interpret that. The position ended up paying quite a bit less than I thought, so I passed. Yeah if you need a referral I would ask on Blind and tag any company you’re interested. Going through a recruiter would probably be better if you can get to one

The issue is many companies in defense aren’t hiring right now. Budgets are tight or being cut. I’ma say not anymore , defense probably gets many applicants these days, those easy days are coming to an end. You can still use it as a stepping stone, just don’t expect to automatically get in if you can piss clean Idk if it’s gotten more competitive but I got a new grad offer from a defense company after one pretty easy interview back in October or so. I got my start in defense. The first project I was on used a combination of legacy and modern technologies. I learned a lot about design and testing on top of the usual bug fixing and feature implementation. Due to the nature of the work, there’s a lot of process involved, so the pace was sometimes slow and it took months from “identify feature” to “customer uses feature.” But as a new engineer, that was good for me because it sort of took the pressure off. The big con for me is that there are really great projects, and really boring projects. I got extremely lucky and got put on a good one, but I had a friend who decided to leave for another team, and he was bored out of his mind with the switch. I will say, though, there’s some mobility. Generally you stay on a project for a year or so, but after that, it’s not too hard to move. Another con is that, depending on the clearance level of the work you do, you may have to spend all day in a windowless room with no phone. I don’t mind this, since I’m an easily distracted person, but I know a lot of people who hate working in a SCIF.
