If you have literally 0 experience, why not? Nothing wrong with national security. Yeah, you’ll be okay. Might be hard to go directly from defense to FAANG (though it’s been done). But it’s not difficult to get into an A tier company after getting some experience if you’re a good developer. Note that if you want to get out of defense/aerospace you should absolutely try between yrs 2-4. In 95% of defense jobs you’ll stop developing hard skills after a few years and good recruiters know this. Gotta get the clearance first. Once you have the clearance and a bit of experience, you’ll have recruiters reaching out to you literally almost every week

Don’t fill out on-line forms unless you want your soul eaten away by stress, one silent rejection at a time. It’s not the Blondie T-Shirt in other words I will buy this only way to apply for a job. I don’t think your plan is a smart one. It sounds like you’re pre-emptively going to aim for the bottom just because you hear about some people having issues, when you haven’t even graduated yet. Yes. Just keep in mind that government doesn’t look for the smartest people; rather, they’re looking for the best people. Defense is more than just government jobs. There are jobs at the big 4 defense contractors, subsidiaries of companies like GE and Honeywell, and other smaller companies. I think it is better to understand the current job market than to make assumptions about how difficult it is finding a job. Remember that Tesla, Microsoft, Facebook, and other Maang companies just laid off like hundreds of thousands of “CS” engineers late 2022-ish(?). So these people come back on the market looking for a job and flood the market with hireable, and wanted reputation. Sorry I meant talent. The guys that startups and other companies have been trying to poach for years are now free, in a sense. So of course others who have been on the market for a while are going to see less interviews, or apply to more job applications and get less hits, because there’s suddenly a lot more applicants. As these high rep engineers get into positions, people will start to see that the rate of hiring CS professionals shouldn’t have changed much. In fact, I predict that over the next 5 to 7 years, we should see more of a demand in CS professionals across all markets. Why? Well ChatGPT and similar AI programs have just been proven to work well on a level never before seen. I think we are at a cusp of a technological revolution. A sort of AI Renaissance of sorts, if you will. The brain was just invented. Now we need people to connect it to everything else.
